# Introduction

> Compiler gives non-technical teams answers about how your app works, without asking engineers.

Compiler is an AI-powered tool that reads your codebase and answers questions about how your app works in plain English. Product, support, sales and operations teams can ask about features, edge cases and behavior, and get answers grounded in the code instead of waiting on an engineer.

You run Compiler on your own infrastructure. It reads your repositories through a private GitHub App you own, and uses Claude through either the Anthropic API or Amazon Bedrock.

## How it fits together

| Component | Role |
| - | - |
| Compiler app | A React Router app on Node.js that serves the UI and runs questions |
| PostgreSQL | Stores conversations, settings, users and repository metadata |
| Redis | Holds resumable stream state and run leases |
| GitHub App | Gives Compiler read-only access to the repositories you choose |
| AI provider | Claude, through the Anthropic API or AWS Bedrock |

The AI provider, GitHub App and file storage are configured in the app after first login, not through environment variables.
